Editorial Policy

Our standards for content accuracy and transparency

Our Editorial Mission

ZipCodeFacts is committed to providing accurate, transparent, and useful information about U.S. ZIP codes. We believe that access to reliable location data helps people make better decisions about where to live, work, and invest. Our editorial approach prioritizes factual accuracy over engagement metrics.

Data-First Approach

  • Source attribution: All statistical data is sourced from identified public datasets. We cite the Census Bureau, Zillow, USDA, and other sources throughout the site.
  • No fabricated data: We do not invent statistics. If data is unavailable for a ZIP code, we display “N/A” or omit the section rather than estimate values.
  • Estimates are labeled: Where a figure is a derived estimate rather than a directly sourced statistic, it is labeled as such. Census ACS figures are survey estimates with margins of error, and we note this on data pages.
  • Transparent scoring: All composite scores include breakdowns showing exactly which factors contributed to the calculation.

AI-Generated Content

ZIP code pages on ZipCodeFacts are generated programmatically from our database of public datasets (Census ACS, Zillow ZHVI, USDA RUCA). Individual pages are not each reviewed by a human editor. Our policy for automated content:

  • Page text is generated strictly from the sourced figures in our database, not from general AI knowledge
  • Pages that do not meet our data-quality thresholds show a limited-data notice instead of a full profile, and are excluded from search indexing
  • We do not publish automated opinions about schools, safety, or who an area is suitable for
  • When data is unavailable, we say so rather than generating estimates

User-Generated Content

Users can submit reviews, ratings, and questions about ZIP codes. Our moderation approach:

  • User content may be moderated or removed for spam, abuse, or misleading claims
  • User opinions represent individual experiences and are not verified by our team
  • User-submitted content is clearly separated from official data sections
  • Users can flag inappropriate content for review

What We Don't Do

  • We do not accept payment for favorable rankings or scores
  • We do not manufacture urgency or fear to drive engagement
  • We do not present estimates as verified facts
  • We do not provide individual financial or real estate advice
  • We do not guarantee the accuracy of any specific data point

Corrections Process

We take data accuracy seriously. If an error is identified:

  1. 1.Reports are reviewed within a reasonable timeframe.
  2. 2.We verify the report against our source data.
  3. 3.If the error is confirmed, we update the data and note the correction.
  4. 4.If the source data itself is inaccurate, we note the discrepancy and link to the original source.

To report an error, use the “Report Data Issue” button on any ZIP code page or contact us through our contact page.
